The culmination of the East End Streetscape Project was celebrated in February with a ribbon cutting event at Harrisburg Plaza. The Streetscape concept was conceived in 2001 with the idea of using rail and freeway underpasses to create “gateways” into the East End. The project brings to life the story of the East End’s growth, its strong sense of history and culture, and proximity to downtown and the Port of Houston.
Designed by RdlR Architects and SWA Group Inc., the project brands the East End with bold design and includes much of the East End’s early Texas history on patterned sidewalks and iconic columns. Seven sites were identified for artful streetscape enhancements, four which have been built thus far. The streetscape project is designed to serve as a catalyst for stimulating economic growth and to enhance the urban environment by creating a positive identity and by celebrating those unique elements representative of the East End's inherent diversity in an unified and coordinated way.
The East End Streetscape project serves a community of urban and artistic vitality by addressing and enhancing all levels of the urban environment: pedestrian, vehicular and commercial, making the District a unique place to visit and experience.
