Construction is set to commence this summer on the Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston (EGMH), a place-base arts initiative. Designed by RDLR Architects, the new museum will be the first of its kind in North America dedicated to addressing the complex social issues of our community—violence, discrimination, social inequity, and racial injustice—by studying and applying the teachings of the world’s greatest peace advocates, beginning with the apostle of peace, Mahatma Gandhi. EGMH will create a multi‐generational, local model for sustainable social good ‐ one that is sure to become a model for communities globally.

Located on a three‐acre property in southwest Houston, the museum is designed as a simple yet meaningful structure rich in symbolic detail. The planning grid for the landscape and building is based on Gandhi’s twenty-four spoke Chakra spinning wheel, the tool he used to seek independence from colonial rule. Twinkle lights planned in the lobby reflect 1000 Lights for Peace, the annual celebration hosted by the Houston Gandhi Library.

A simple material palette and exposed building structure are an honest and sincere expression of the structure, like Gandhi himself. In keeping with Gandhi’s respect for nature, the building is designed to minimize carbon footprint and meet LEED certification standards. Existing trees on the site create a natural physical barrier to the nearby highway.

The promise of the museum is to educate visitors in Gandhi’s messages of tolerance and love towards non-violent conflict resolution that results in lasting peace. In today’s divisive political and social climate, no message is more pertinent. Gandhi’s message is universal and timeless. The goal is to encourage visitors to embrace these values in their own lives, creating a positive force for social good.
