Northeast Houston Transfer Facility Promotes Safety and Increases Work Efficiency

Located at 5711 Neches Street, the 25-acre solid waste campus is operated and managed by the City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) and services the Northeast quadrant of Houston. The complex is composed of vehicle maintenance facilities, administration offices, fueling and vehicle wash facilities. As the only transfer station in the Northeast quadrant, increased operational efficiency is critical when facilitating the transfer of solid waste to the closest landfill.

After full evaluation of the existing facility, it was obvious that the existing facility was too small to allow for the desired transfer of 1,000 plus tons per day. Additionally, the existing facility did not allow for sufficient overhead space to unload on the tipping floor and it lacked additional design requirements for a safe and efficient facility. Continued use of the existing facility would result in rapid damage to the structural steel and floor and require replacement of the entire tipping floor within a few months.

The design team worked closely with SWMD on proposed options, and it was determined to move forward with a replacement design of a larger and more adequate transfer facility on the existing site that promotes employee safety and increases work efficiency and productivity through planning and design. The new 25,000 SF Northeast Transfer Station will include scales and a scale house. Site improvements include landscaping, parking, storm water detention, fencing and exterior lighting, as well as the incorporation of an existing operational radio tower.
