Founded in 1982 by Rey de la Reza, FAIA, RDLR Architects (RDLR) followed Rey’s vision to create quality community driven design. This vision resulted in some of Houston’s most iconic public spaces, such as the bridges over US59, Cotswold streetscapes in Downtown and streetscapes in Houston’s east end.
At the time of the firm’s founding, the number of Hispanic owned architectural firms were quite limited. Today, there are numerous Hispanic owned firms reflecting the phenomenal growth of Latino business nationally. RDLR is now in its second generation of ownership and continues to expand efforts to serve community focused non-profit and public clients. Located in Houston’s East End, Hispanic leadership continues to influence the firm to this day. Diversity, equity, and inclusion remain at the core of the business. These guiding principles drive key decisions to grow the firm, cultivate leaders and are central to the firm’s mission and impact on the communities served.
“From our company's beginnings 40 years ago, our corporate philosophy has always been that we are Houstonians first and foremost, with a vested interest in the responsible growth of our city and the communities within it,” said Daniel Ortiz, AIA, LEED AP, Principal of RDLR Architects.
The firm has continued to design iconic, award-winning, architecture throughout the City of Houston including the Houston Food Bank, SER Jobs for Progress, HCTRA Toll Gantry’s, IAH People Movers, METRO LRT Stations, METRO Transit Centers, as well as, numerous education, municipal and aviation projects. Having received over 40 design awards, the firm also received the Texas Society of Architects, Architecture Firm Award, the highest honor awarded to a firm.
The firm has ongoing projects with the Houston Airport System, Fort Bend County, City of Houston, City of Sugar Land, Houston Community College, Fort Bend Independent School District, Houston Independent School District, and The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD. Recent project awards include the facility design for METRO Maintenance of Way, City of Houston Multi-Use Solid Waste Management, and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
